About this Event
Whatever your background, the Scriberia Academy Diploma course is designed to give you the edge as a visual thinker, creator and communicator in an increasingly streamlined and onscreen workplace.
As one Diploma participant puts it:
“This course is more than just visual notetaking, it’s actually learning how to perceive and interpret in a new way — and I think any part of any organisation would benefit from that.”
Scriberia is a world-leading visual storyteller, and everything we do is drawing-based. We know from daily experience just how powerful a simple but carefully chosen image can be in cutting through confusion and disengagement.
We believe, too, that everyone can gain from developing their skills and confidence in making quick and simple pictures to explain complex processes, solve problems, generate ideas, deepen learning and tell compelling stories.
That's why we've created this six-part live and interactive online course especially for adults who have little artistic training, but those with more advanced skills will find it a valuable and refreshing course on visual thinking too.
When is it happening and what will I learn?
1: DRAWING
2hr Zoom workshop: Friday 28 May 2021, 15.00-17.00 London time (BST)
The foundations: build your confidence to use drawing as an everyday tool and gain simple techniques to tackle any challenge.
2: NOTETAKING
2hr Zoom workshop: Friday 4 June 2021, 15.00-17.00 London time (GMT)
Make your notes more memorable and more shareable. Learn how to capture ideas and insights visually and in real time.
3: SIMPLIFYING
2hr Zoom workshop: Friday 11 June 2021, 15.00-17.00 London time (BST)
Use pictures to help refine your ideas, prioritise and get to the essence of meaning.
4: STORYTELLING
2hr Zoom workshop: Friday 18 June 2021, 15.00-17.00 London time (BST)
Create compelling visual stories, bring scenarios to life and engage your audience with impact and economy.
5: CREATING
2hr Zoom workshop: Friday 25 June 2021, 15.00-17.00 London time (GMT)
Hone your ability to spot connections, see creative opportunities and combine existing ideas to form new ones.
6: MAPPING*
3hr Zoom workshop: Friday 2 July 2021, 15.00-18.00 London time (BST)
Disentangle the complexity, find the stories in the data and bring form and structure to uncertainty.
*Please note: the final workshop is one hour longer.
How do the live sessions work?
Our aim for this course is to equip you with the power to wield your pencil to clear the thickets of tangled thinking, pin down good ideas and deliver the message with added power.
Each Friday you’ll be coached in a live workshop on Zoom in a group of no more than 15 participants by one or more facilitators from Scriberia's senior team. The workshop is a warm and supportive environment where we'll take you through fun interactive lessons and practical drawing exercises. Workshops 2-5 begin by reviewing the previous week's homework together, since that's the best way to develop individually and learn from each other.
Please note, we won't be sharing any recordings of the Zoom workshops, because the live group experience is so important to the process of discovery on this course. You'll get the most out of it by committing to join all six live sessions, but the most essential workshop is the first.
What happens outside the live sessions?
Following each live workshop, we'll share video tutorials and summary posters to support your further learning on the topic. These online resources also include self-led homework challenges for you to experiment with and upload your results to our private homework gallery for this course. Aim to set aside at least two hours every week for homework. We'll review the gallery together at the start of each workshop.
On completing the course, you'll be given your Scriberia Academy Diploma certificate to celebrate your success. To complete the Diploma, we'll expect you to have taken part in at least four workshops and shared four full sets of homework. (This is not an academically accredited diploma.)
What special drawing tech do I need? (Just paper and pen)
It often feels safer to make pictures with digital tools. But they can distract from the task, or muddy the message. So the six workshops focus on capturing clear and sharp ideas at speed just with paper and pen. And that's all you need for the homework too. In other words, you don’t need special kit to take part. We will, though, recommend drawing software if you want to use that for projects outside the workshops.

What do Diploma course graduates say?
"What I learned at Scriberia Academy is that to be a good communicator you need to transform complexity into simplicity, an information storm into a clear landscape, a complicated picture full of details into a focus-framed picture with essential and useful information. If we apply the same rules to our businesses all will be simpler, faster and more flexible. I believe in visual thinking to make our interactions easier and our solutions faster!”
Moira Buzzolani, Director Design Operations in Brand Marketing, adidas
"The Diploma really got my heart pumping. It was a lot of fun. It was a great cohort as well, the people who participated, what they shared. I really liked that we had this constant feedback, and looking at the work the others did. [Also] the resources after each session were amazing. A great course, brilliantly delivered."
Roman Schöneboom, UX Design Systems Lead at a global wealth manager company ( read Roman's full interview about the course)
"The Scriberia Diploma has definitely taught me a new way of thinking. Yes, I've learned a lot about how to draw but, even when I'm not drawing, I think in a different way."
Richard Craig-McFeely, Business Development Lead for a large media and entertainment technology company ( read Richard's full interview about the course)
“I warmly recommend this inspiring and hands-on course to everyone: ‘visual enthusiasts’, visual thinkers and even the ‘visual sceptics’. You will receive tools you can use in a number of different situations and settings and you will learn from and with amazing people, from all walks of life, you might have never had the chance to meet.”
Anita Danka, independent human rights law expert and Interim Deputy Head of Human Rights Department, OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR)
“The delivery of the Scriberia Diploma course was absolutely excellent, the pace and content were just right - but most importantly you created a warm and supportive environment.”
Hazel White, Director, Open Change
