Level Up: Critical Skills for Local Reporters
Online seminar, Oct. 4-Nov. 15 (with a week off for Election Day!)
This interactive, virtual training will help reporters up their game and develop the essential skills needed for a satisfying and sustainable career in journalism.
Poynter local news expert Kristen Hare and a slate of accomplished journalists will provide master-class level instruction on key concepts including reporting and writing, investigations, trauma-informed interviewing, fact-checking and audience development.
Sessions will also include dedicated time to discuss the realities facing the journalism industry and how to navigate them over a sustainable and satisfying career, while a custom weekly newsletter will supplement instruction with more resources and interviews.
Lead With Influence
Online seminar, Oct. 3-24
Most leadership training is designed for supervisors who have direct reports. But in today’s newsrooms, leaders are just as often responsible for projects, products or people across departments. Demonstrating leadership without formal authority is its own skill, and it’s core to this online leadership workshop from Poynter.
Pulling from the best practices, feedback and application needs of Poynter’s flagship  Leadership Academy for Women in Media, this four-session workshop is especially designed to help women and nonbinary journalists in the industry use their social capital to lead with influence.
If you have the official title of project manager or product manager, or are in the position of being responsible for outcomes without formally supervising anyone — this includes those all-important bridge roles in audience, innovation and strategy — this program is for you.

???? In July, 23 journalists who specialize in fact-checking attended a masterclass workshop, led by PolitiFact’s Katie Sanders, in partnership with the nonprofit RAND Corporation . Participants represented a number of U.S. communities and diverse outlets, including The Associated Press, USA Today, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Factchequeado. RAND experts went deep on topics relevant to fact-checkers, briefing the group on China’s foreign policy goals, Russian disinformation networks and the gaps in gun violence data for suicides and school shootings. The final session of the day offered a rundown of tricks for finding red flags in flawed research. Welcome to these new Poynter graduates!
